Le Morte Darthur è una raccolta di romances e leggende su Artù e i cavalieri della Tavola Rotonda. E’ l’opera più famosa del ciclo arturiano in Inghilterra. Malory non inventa: riprende e traduce materiale già in circolazione in Francia dal XIII secolo, però vi incorpora anche un poema allitterativo in Middle English, del 1400 circa. Esistono Le Morte Darthur e Alliterative Morte Arthure. Malory scrive solo Le Morte Darthur. Inizia la composizione nel 1450, in carcere, e la completa nel 1470, un anno prima della morte.
La stampa arriva in Inghilterra nel 1476, a opera di William Caxton. Il primo libro a essere stampato sul suolo inglese è The Canterbury Tales di Chaucer. Le Morte Darthur esce nel 1485. Caxton ha fatto dei cambiamenti nella lingua, passando dal Middle English al Modern English (Old English: metà V – metà XII secolo / Middle English: metà XII- fine XV secolo /Modern English: dal 1550 circa). Inoltre complica la comprensione del testo la scelta di Caxton di attribuire una divisione in libri diversa da quella di Malory.
